Tutor: People Who Challenge and Inspire You
...Spend a lot of time with them, and it will change your life.
Another National Test Prep Association Winter Workshop is in the books, and this one may have been the best yet. More than 60 tutors and test prep professionals gathered in New Orleans last week for an intense array of presentations, panels, breakout groups, and exercises designed to improve both instruction and operations. While I had the privilege of emceeing the first day and paneling on the second, I learned way more than I may have taught.

But that’s not the only good reason to travel halfway across the country during a surprisingly busy time of year, is it? Obviously, NOLA deserves attention as a destination for great food and fun times. For me, though, the people involved always matter more.
Not that long ago, I wrote about how enriching the life of a tutor can be when good colleagues become great friends. I live my truth every day. But a question worth exploring may be why tutors stand out as some of the best folks around for both serious professional development and festive frivolity.
Why wouldn’t they be?
Aren’t most exceptional tutors smart, caring, curious, and emotionally intelligent?
Smart people are usually funny
Caring people rarely flake.
Curious people have lots of fascinating interests and experiences.
Emotionally intelligent people make sure everyone is involved and engaged.
These are the kinds of friends and colleagues I want to meet in random cities multiple times a year to learn and laugh with, the kind of crowd Amy Poehler had in mind when she said, “Find a group of people who challenge and inspire you; spend a lot of time with them, and it will change your life.”
If you’re reading this newsletter, you’re probably like this too. Find your way to the tribe and book your spot next time we all meet up, which should be Philadelphia in June 2024. Hope to see you then… or sooner!
